About our census publications

We have endeavoured to make the census transcription publications as accurate as possible, by carefully comparing entries for the same families in different census years to highlight errors and anomalies. Although this is time-consuming, the reward is ever more accurate information for tricky searches. Careful note is made of women who change between their married and maiden names, and illegitimate children who change between their father’s and mother’s surnames. In these cases the indivdual is indexed under both surnames.

You can see a sample page from one of our census transcriptions by clicking here, and a sample index page by clicking here.

We can also provide good quality photocopies from our microfilm collection of the original handwritten census pages for the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census of the Scottish Borders area, plus 1851 for Dumfriesshire.
