New for 2011 - Read the Chambers’ Edinburgh Journal week by week.
From the 11th of February 2011 we will update this page with new high quality images so you can transport yourself back in time for a few minutes each week.
The first issue is dated the 11th of February 1832. You will be able to read a variety of interesting articles, from “The Art of Printing” to a stories like “The Runaway” – An English Tale, by Miss Mitford. My hope is fellow researchers will find these journals interesting and enjoyable reading and help to give a deeper understanding of life in the early nineteenth century.
These articles it must be remembered were written nearly 180 years ago, much has been discovered since then. Some articles need to be read in the context in which they were written; scientific discoveries may have changed current thinking. We have uploaded these historical journals not as an expression of our own opinion but as an historical document.
I will not be indexing these journals as they do not contain a lot of genealogical information. However, each issue will have its own webpage with a brief summary, so if you find an interesting point please email me and I will add it to the summary.
